The City of Bend is taking significant steps to enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety along Cooley Road, particularly in its northern section, which has long been a concern for residents. During the recent Bend MPO TAC meeting, officials highlighted the importance of improving this area, especially as the Central Oregon Intergovernmental Council (CET) has introduced a new bus stop as part of Route 8 nearby.
Currently, the northern stretch of Cooley Road lacks adequate sidewalks and bike lanes, making it challenging for pedestrians and cyclists to navigate safely. However, plans are in motion to repave this section of the road next year, which presents an opportunity to implement crucial sidewalk improvements and potentially restripe bike lanes. This initiative aims to create a more connected and accessible pedestrian network, especially with the upcoming relocation of the Juniper Ridge campus.
The discussion also touched on the need for better connections to local schools, such as SkyView, and the Cascade Village Mall, which are vital for community access. The city is committed to addressing these infrastructure gaps, with officials noting that many accidents occur at intersections along Cooley Road.
As the city moves forward with these improvements, residents can expect a safer and more navigable environment for both pedestrians and cyclists, reinforcing Bend's commitment to enhancing its transportation network.
