City parks staff reported multiple operational updates including a donated playground, a new full-time grant writer on staff and several upcoming community events.
A staff member said a new playground structure at Trainer Park was donated by Rotary and five other organizations, including Latino outreach groups. The staff member said they photographed families using the new structure and that it “looks really nice.”
Staff also introduced Emmy Westlake as the city’s new full-time grant writer. “She is our new full time grant writer for the City Of New York,” a staff member said, adding the city will update its capital improvement planning program (referred to in the meeting as the “RCMP program that stands for the capital improvement program”) to incorporate recently adopted sewer and water master-plan projects and to create a five-year project roadmap for grant-seeking.
Staff listed upcoming events: a suicide-prevention “Chain Walk” at Cone Gimmel Plaza, a 9/11 memorial event on the Old Courthouse Lawn at 7 a.m., a multicultural event on the Old Courthouse Lawn from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., a Kids’ Spooktacular at the fairgrounds on Oct. 25 and planning for a children's Christmas festival. A commissioner noted the city served 900 children at last year’s festival. Commissioners welcomed the new grant writer and thanked staff for the updates.
