Summary
Councilmembers said a Sept. 30 meeting with the South Carolina Department of Transportation and Sea Pines representatives left the town responsible for preliminary designs; council plans to generate cost estimates and pursue funding options for Sea Pines Circle and Greenwood Drive improvements.
Councilmember Turner reported on a Sept. 30 meeting involving the South Carolina Department of Transportation, Sea Pines representatives and town staff about Sea Pines Circle and Greenwood Drive. Turner said the parties are working to establish objectives and that the town will pursue preliminary designs and cost estimates to identify funding needs.
Turner said the town and the state have different preferences for the circle design: "The state likes small circles. We like big circles. We're gonna see if we can come up with some type of a compromise in that regard and then, go after funding sources, which which is a challenge." She added that some preliminary engineering work has already been budgeted in the current town budget.
Turner said Greenwood Drive is being considered for inclusion in the overall project scope. She told council the state asked that the town supply the preliminary designs rather than the state producing them. Councilmembers did not vote on design details at the Oct. 7 meeting; the discussion was presented as background and next steps.
Town staff will proceed with preliminary designs and cost estimation so the town understands likely funding needs before pursuing state or other external funding sources.
