Davie County Schools staff presented a package of policy updates on Oct. 17 that reflect changes in state law enacted over the summer and updates tied to federal Title IX regulations. The board received the items as a first reading and staff said the policies will return for final action in November.
Superintendent Dr. Belcher summarized the list of policies under first reading, which includes items on parental involvement and inspection of instructional materials, a cluster of Title IX-related updates (grievance process, harassment prohibitions and retaliation protections), changes tied to overnight and sleeping‑quarters provisions for field trips, religious-exemption accommodations, extracurricular-activity rules for sleeping quarters and updated rules on wireless communications devices in schools. Staff also cited updates to public-record retention and personnel-file posting requirements.
Dr. Belcher said the Title IX updates reflect recent federal administration guidance and that the parental-inspection policy revision responds to a state law change affecting timelines and procedures for parents to review instructional materials. The presentation included a list of policies recommended for rescission because new or revised policies now cover the same topics.
Board members were told the recommended rescissions and the revised policies are on first reading and that the board will receive them again for action in November. Dr. Belcher and staff invited feedback between meetings.
