Beaumont launches interactive CIP GIS map so residents and council can track capital projects

Beaumont — City staff on Oct. 7 demonstrated a new interactive Capital Improvement Program (CIP) GIS map on the City of Beaumont website that lets residents and councilmembers view project locations, status and basic budget information.
Xiomara, a management analyst in Public Works, and the department’s GIS team walked council through the map’s features: five status tabs (all projects, completed, future/feasibility, in design and under construction), color coding by status, visible project footprints, and a project details pane that lists project type, total cost, status, a short description and an estimated closeout date. Users can click a project number on the map or use the tab list to open the same details.
Staff credited GIS analyst Bradley Barnhart and public‑works intern Ashton Buer for compiling the map data. “This is a quick time‑saving way for anyone to check on the status of a project they’re interested in in the city,” Xiomara said. Staff said the map will be continually improved and updated as project information changes.
Council response was uniformly positive. Councilmember White and Councilmember Finn praised the tool; Councilmember Martinez said it helps councilmembers who “sometimes forget” project details and provides quick access to cost and location information. Mayor Pro Tem Voigt noted that the map is formatted for mobile phones and said that ease of use will be helpful when councilmembers are asked about project costs in the field.
How to access it: Staff said the map is available from the Public Works section of the city website under the CIP tab and can be opened by clicking the map image. The map’s details pane includes a snapshot zoomed to the project area and a link to “view more information.”
Why it matters: City staff said the map improves transparency by centralizing capital project information, reduces repeated information requests to staff, and gives residents and elected officials an at‑a‑glance tool to find project status and budget information.
Next steps: Staff said they will continue to refine the map and its data feed, and they plan to publicize the tool to the public.
