Beaumont council approves draft truck‑route ordinance, schedules public hearing; proposes 7‑ton limit and $500 minimum fine

Beaumont — The Beaumont City Council on Oct. 7 voted to approve a draft ordinance and directed staff to schedule a public hearing to adopt truck prohibitions on city streets, including a proposed 7‑ton weight limit on restricted corridors and a new $500 minimum fine for unauthorized commercial truck parking.

The council action follows a staff presentation and consultant briefing summarizing recommended prohibited corridors, the signage needed for enforcement and state coordination required where trucks exit the Interstate 10 freeway. The council directed staff to return with the ordinance for public hearing and formal adoption.

Why it matters: The ordinance is intended to keep large through‑freight off residential and sensitive corridors, concentrate truck movements on designated priority routes and give police clear signage and a code section to enforce. Council members and staff said the measure is meant to reduce safety risks, noise and pavement damage where heavy trucks are not appropriate.
