Graham County supervisors approve sheriff's small equipment purchase and two state DUI enforcement grants

The Graham County Board of Supervisors on Oct. 6 approved a small unbudgeted capital purchase for the sheriff's detention facility and accepted two state grants to fund overtime for traffic and DUI enforcement.
Sheriff Allred asked the board to approve the purchase of an industrial burnisher (floor polisher) after the department's previous unit failed. "It's a floor industrial ... for our facility, for our jail," Allred said, noting the facility is new and staff work to keep it in good condition.
The board also accepted a Governor's Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) grant package consisting of $10,000 for STEP (selective traffic enforcement) overtime and $14,737 for DUI overtime, travel and supplies. The sheriff said the total is slightly less than in prior years but "there's enough there to help us" with patrol and DUI enforcement.
The discussion included questions from board members about whether the county is receiving less state funding than in previous years and whether the board should advocate for higher allocations at the state level. The sheriff said he would follow up to determine why funding was reduced.
Both the burnisher purchase (under $3,000) and the GOHS grant acceptance were moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
The actions are intended to support routine facility maintenance and to fund overtime patrols to address traffic safety and DUI enforcement on county roads.
