Representative Farhat testified in support of the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters’ Schools 2 Tools mobile program, a trailer‑based field trip that brings hands‑on demonstrations and apprenticeship information to middle and high school students across Southeast, Mid and West Michigan and the Upper Peninsula. He said the program has reached more than 24,000 students in a year and a half and provides tools‑hands experiences, teacher professional development, career days and summer camp opportunities.
Committee members asked whether the program operates from a single trailer and how sustainability will be achieved. Representative Farhat said the group currently has one trailer that travels to schools and that the program uses a Detroit training facility and other fixed locations; funds sought would help continue operations including staff, travel and outreach. He noted the broader workforce shortage in trades and said the program’s mobile model addresses access challenges.
No formal committee action was taken during the hearing.
