The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government Police and Fire Retirement Fund Board met Oct. 8 and accepted the treasurers report and transfer authorization letter, approved routine disbursements and minutes, authorized a widows annuity for Virginia Phillips and moved two disability applications to medical review, the board said.
The treasurer reported the funds value as $1,050,970,512.89 as of the morning before the meeting, compared with $1,042,500,906.18 the prior month. Board members voted to accept the report and the accompanying transfer authorization letter.
Why it matters: the board manages retirement benefits for Lexington police and fire retirees and active members. Regular approvals of transfers, disbursements and disability referrals determine benefit flows and the start dates or status of individual retirements.
The board voted on several personnel and benefits items. A motion to approve a widows annuity for Virginia Phillips passed without recorded opposition. The board noted the retiree police trustee election results (informational): Tommy won and will serve another two-year term as the police retiree representative.
Service and disability items: the board approved a service retirement for Officer Christopher Carrington, Division of Police, effective Aug. 9, 2025. Two disability mattersapplications for total and permanent occupational disability for Coby Reek (Division of Fire) and for Robert Mott (Division of Fire)were moved to the appropriate doctors for medical review. The board also acted on medical reports for Michael Rath, Division of Fire, approving the reports presented at the meeting.
Tributes and condolences: members read a list of recent deaths among retirees and family members and several members offered remembrances. The board recorded tributes for Mary Douglas (spouse of John Douglas, Division of Police), Michael Dennis (Division of Fire), Don Lee (Division of Police), Judy Van Hooten Grenay (widow of John Van Hooten Grenay, Division of Police), Glenn Phillips (Division of Fire) and Cortez Day (Division of Police). Board member Puckett recalled working with several of the honorees and described them as longtime, respected colleagues: "He was just absolutely, a great guy," Puckett said of Cortez Day. Chief Wells said Glenn Phillips "was an outstanding paramedic and probably one of the finest EMS educators" the department employed.
Other business and member concerns: the board received committee updates (no immediate action) and a member urged the board to consider steps to address a reported loss of purchasing power among retirees, saying, "the report came in on the consumer our retirees lost buying power, and I would urge this Board to, take some action forthwith to help them." The board then moved to adjourn.
The meeting record shows routine procedural votes approving minutes and disbursements; motions were made and seconded on the record and passed by voice vote.
Next steps: disability applications will proceed to medical examinations as directed; no other new policy actions were recorded at the meeting. The board adjourned after the items above.
