Members of the Veteran and Veteran Families Advisory Committee discussed arranging a colors/flag ceremony for the Scottish Highland Games in January and offered to coordinate with veterans groups and youth organizations to provide an honor or color guard.
One committee member described longstanding efforts to recruit ROTC or veterans groups for the opening ceremony and said timing often conflicts with Martin Luther King Day events that draw ROTC units elsewhere. The committee discussed potential participants including the Young Marines, the American Legion and auxiliary members.
City staff clarified the city's role: the city provides the venue to the event organizer, the Scottish American Society of Central Florida, but the organization runs the Highland Games program. “The city's role in the programming of the Highland Games, we're really just providing the venue to the event organizer,” a staff member said, and suggested the committee could connect veterans groups directly to the event organizer if they wished.
Committee members volunteered to coordinate outside the advisory meeting and to provide contacts for an honor guard or color detail; no city action or funding commitment was made at the meeting.
