City recreation staff presented updates to the Veteran and Veteran Families Advisory Committee on planning for the city's Veterans Day ceremony and asked local veterans organizations to indicate interest in a new informational booth by Oct. 28.
Hannah Kirsch, the city's recreation and events manager, told the committee that performers and the event timeline are “going according to our usual timeline.” Kirsch said Octavius Clark from Winter Springs High School will host the ceremony for a third year, and the high school band is confirmed to perform if the event can be held outdoors at the Veterans Memorial. “We are looking to update the honor roll of all of the veterans who are on the Veterans Memorial with the updated names and pronunciations,” Kirsch said.
Kirsch described a new one‑booth informational resource for visiting veterans and said staff have approval to pilot a single booth this year. “At this point, what was approved was just one booth currently,” she said, adding that staff will reconsider expansion in later years depending on interest.
Kirsch asked committee members to send the name, organization and a direct contact so staff can include organizations on the event map and coordinate with on‑site police. She said the event will start at 6 p.m. and asked committees and organizations to notify staff at least two weeks prior to the event; she said that deadline would be Oct. 28.
Committee members discussed logistics and offered to coordinate among veterans posts. One member noted the Marine Corps League could serve as a point of contact and another said the American Legion and the VFW auxiliary would be asked to participate.
Kirsch also said staff are planning an audio or recorded backup for the high school band's performance in case weather forces an indoor move.
The advisory committee did not vote on the event plan; staff presented the operational details and asked for organizational contacts and volunteer support.
