Olympia — The Olympia City Council on Oct. 7 proclaimed October 2025 as Hindu Heritage Month in Olympia and heard remarks from several local Hindu community members who thanked the city for the recognition and described cultural traditions and festivals.
Council Member Madron led a shared reading of the proclamation, which cites Hindu Americans’ diverse ethnic backgrounds, cultural contributions and festivals observed in October, and it calls on residents to increase awareness and understanding of the Hindu American community.
Community speakers described core tenets and celebrations of Hinduism, including the Vedas, the Bhagavad Gita, concepts such as dharma and karma, and festivals such as Navaratri, Diwali and Holi. One speaker said, “Hinduism is 1 of the world's oldest and most fascinating religions originating in India over 4000 years ago.” Another speaker invited Olympians to participate in local activities at the Olympia Cultural Hindu Temple and weekly events on Blackbaud Boulevard. Several speakers thanked Mayor Dante Payne, the council and city staff for initiating recognition last year and for continuing the tradition.
The proclamation is ceremonial; the council presented the signed document and took photos with community representatives. City staff and community organizers encouraged residents to join local temple events and celebrations throughout October.
