Board awards $570,000 contract for countywide sidewalk vertical displacement mitigation

The Board of Public Works on Oct. 8 authorized the director to award project CW‑25‑008 (on‑call sidewalk vertical displacement mitigation) to Calumet Civil Contractors Inc. for a not‑to‑exceed amount of $570,000.

Jason Watt, engineering division administrator for construction, told the board the work consists of removal of vertical sidewalk displacements countywide; the contractor is the lowest responsive, responsible bidder. He said the engineer's estimate was $675,000 and two bids were received; Calumet's bid was about 16% below the estimate. The contract lists a suspension completion date of April 30, 2026 and a final completion date of June 14, 2026.

Watt said the Minority and Women Business Development review determined Calumet made a good‑faith effort on MWBE participation. When a board member asked how sidewalk locations are selected, Watt said the selection is “largely based on requests that come through to the Mayor's Action Center as well as things we've logged through operations…. We go out and verify those. We keep a master needs inventory of them.”

The board approved the bid award by voice vote.
