Council backs negotiation of Ironman 70.3 host-venue agreement; staff to return with cost analysis

The City Council authorized the city manager to negotiate and sign a host-venue agreement with World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) for an Ironman 70.3-branded triathlon to be held in August 2026, with additional events in 2027 and 2028 if the three-year commitment proceeds. Staff described the event as a major coordination effort that would require city services including personnel, security, facilities, event coordination, permitting assistance, communications and parking; some services — hotels, ambulance/medical services, concessions, shuttles and volunteers — were described as third-party responsibilities that the city does not directly provide.

To address the third-party needs, staff said they will negotiate a partnership agreement with Choose Redding Lodging, which has committed more than $200,000 across three years to support the event. Staff and council noted WTC and tourism partners have begun preliminary outreach to county, Caltrans, the National Park Service and local lodging and business organizations; all agencies expressed preliminary support for investigating feasibility.

Council members pressed staff to return with a detailed analysis of the city’s direct costs (overtime, police, facilities, traffic control) before final signature; staff said WTC is eager to market the event and that partnership negotiations and an event cost analysis would be completed and returned to council by year-end. Council authorized the mayor and city manager to execute the host-venue agreement and to negotiate a partnership agreement with Choose Redding Lodging.

Council members and staff noted the city would need to prepare for a significant operational lift and that estimated city costs would be brought back for review; staff said they expect increased tax and hotel occupancy tax revenue but also additional staffing and resource needs.
