The El Mirage Common Council voted Oct. 7 to award a contract to Standard Construction to install signage and striping improvements on Thompson Ranch Road, a section the city identified as having a concentration of accidents near Greenway Road.
City staff presented a safety study and a proposed layout that included warning signs for a curve and a local valley gutter “dip” in the roadway. The report recommended several improvements, including chevrons and turn restrictions at locations with limited sight distance; staff said a broader “road diet” that would remove a travel lane in each direction and add bike lanes was not part of the approved scope because public feedback has been strongly negative in an on‑line poll.
Council Member Eldridge stressed the dip at the valley gutter is the “biggest problem” and urged staff to prioritize a fix; staff replied the project before council focuses on signing and striping and that the physical dip removal would require a separate design and funding. Vice Mayor Parsons moved to approve the contract; the motion passed with a second and a roll-call vote.
The approved contract includes a base proposal and a 10 percent contingency; staff said the contractor was the low bidder and that the project is intended as a near‑term safety step while the city continues to evaluate longer-term roadway modifications. No changes to speed limits were approved at the meeting.
