Wayne Sumners accepted the recognition and noted others’ contributions to building and maintaining the fields, thanking volunteers and the handful of people who gave extensive time to construct bleachers and buildings. "There were a lot of people that contributed to the development of that field... and for their help, I'm grateful," Sumners said.
The council’s action was purely honorary: Resolution 12‑81 names the athletic complex and does not, in the meeting record, authorize municipal funding or maintenance changes tied to the renaming. Sumners said the family and many volunteers will continue work at the site and that the city will pursue a permanent tribute to contributors at the park’s center.
The resolution was presented and approved during the meeting; council did not record any amendments or follow‑up assignments requiring staff reports at this session.
