Emergency services: county reports steady response times, outlines EMR course and ambulance placements

Mike Bremer, Emergency Services Director, told the Public Safety Committee on Oct. 9 that the county had 1,716 runs so far this year, with 192 runs between Aug. 15 and Sept. 15, and an average response time of about 10.6 minutes.
Bremer said he will teach an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) course beginning in November for high‑school seniors who are 18 or about to turn 18; the course will run after lunch through the end of the school term and will let students challenge the national registry for state licensure. He said he has 10 students signed up in Hayward and plans to expand to Winter once scheduling allows.
On ambulance placements, Bremer reported there are two ambulances in Ojibwe, three in Hayward and one in Timber Bay undergoing repairs (wheel bearings). He said an ambulance that had been intended for use in Exeland was not placed there after the local committee preferred responders to operate from home. Bremer also said he is finalizing a contract with Glidden for first‑response coverage in that area and will send the contract to county communications staff for review.
Bremer confirmed his office is investigating a recent fatal crash and that toxicology results are pending. Committee members asked follow‑up questions about staffing, ambulance locations and coordination with local fire departments. No committee votes were taken on EMS operations at the Oct. 9 meeting.
