Sheriff: Patrol Calls Down Slightly; Jail Inspection Positive; traffic grants awarded

The Sawyer County sheriff’s office reported to the Public Safety Committee on Oct. 9 that patrol call volumes dipped slightly in September and that the jail received a favorable annual inspection.
A sheriff’s lieutenant said September call volumes were 696 and three‑month trends peaked at 861 in July and 742 in August; last year’s comparable figure was 778 calls for the same period. For September the department issued 21 traffic citations, 9 written warnings and 1 non‑traffic citation. The lieutenant reported 11 crashes for the period, including 2 personal‑injury crashes and 1 fatality; year‑to‑date totals cited were 208 crashes, 47 personal injuries and 3 fatalities.
The department also received notice of two Wisconsin Department of Transportation grants: a $12,000 speed enforcement award and a $5,000 seat‑belt grant. Both grants require a 25 percent soft match, the lieutenant said, meaning the department accounts for enforcement contacts from regular patrol officers as part of the match.
Sheriff representatives reported the county’s county jail average daily population was 64 for September with a year‑to‑date average of 58. The sheriff said the jail currently has five people on electronic monitoring. A state jail inspector conducted the annual inspection recently and issued an “excellent” report with a few minor suggestions and no required changes, the sheriff said.
The committee did not take formal action on enforcement grants or jail operations at the Oct. 9 meeting; the reports were informational.
