County administrator signals plan to tighten access controls and weapons policies across county facilities

The county administrator told the Knox County Commission on Sept. 9 that staff will pursue a unified upgrade to access control and security across county facilities, including reviewing who has building access and systems that permit that access. "Our IT director is up to bid now doing some research of what does that access company look like," the administrator said, explaining that IT, HR and the airport manager are involved.
The administrator said staff have found employees entering buildings "that have no business entering the buildings," and described the effort as proactive rather than reactive. The scope will include the courthouse, jail, public safety and airport facilities. "In my opinion, we need to tighten it up all around," the administrator said, and added that the county will evaluate access privileges and physical security controls, including policies around weapons access in county facilities.
No formal motion or vote occurred; the administrator characterized this as a heads-up ahead of the budget process and procurement work. Commissioners were told the work will be flushed out in coming budget materials and that IT will present options and cost estimates as part of the fiscal discussions. The administrator also noted that a separate jail project (gym renovation) is near completion.
