The Knox County Commission voted unanimously Sept. 9 to allow the county administrator to sign an employment contract for a new communications director and to add the item to the meeting agenda. The commission's action authorized a formal employment contract with defined evaluation periods. "We do have a communications director who has gone through the process. We would like to make an offer," the county administrator said during the meeting.
Commissioners first voted to add the contract authorization to the meeting agenda by unanimous voice vote, then approved a motion allowing the administrator to execute the employment contract. The administrator said the contract is intended to create clear expectations and a finite evaluation period for the new hire, rather than an open-ended employment arrangement. "This gets rid of it, at least for now, that open ended," the administrator said, explaining that the approach provides more structure than the standard employment policy.
The county administrator told commissioners the communications director is scheduled to begin work on Oct. 13, with some onboarding activity planned for Oct. 8. Staff said department managers and HR are coordinating the transition and that the contract language includes a review window "for what we expect in the next three months and six months." A commissioner said adopting the contract could set a precedent for future department head hires and help clarify expectations.
Ending
The motion authorizing the administrator to sign the communications director employment contract passed 3–0. The administrator and HR staff will finalize the contract and begin onboarding the new communications director.
