The Secaucus Board of Education voted Wednesday to approve a broad slate of administrative and financial measures, including personnel placements, policy second readings, curriculum updates and the mandatory Student Safety Data System report to the New Jersey Department of Education.
Why it matters: The votes complete required administrative filings, update curriculum and authorize legal support for litigation the board said is ongoing, affecting the district’s legal posture and near-term budgets.
Key votes and approvals: The board approved resolutions R1.01 through R1.34 (personnel and extracurricular appointments), adopted policy R2.01 on second reading, and approved curriculum- and student-representative resolutions R3.01 through R3.03. The board’s motions for finance included R4.01 through R4.17; R4.17 is a retainer agreement to engage the law firm Chasen, Lamparello, Mallon & Capuzzio as special counsel.
The Student Safety Data System (SSDS) report, a mandatory submission to the New Jersey Department of Education that records incidents of violence, vandalism, weapons, substance abuse and harassment, intimidation and bullying, was presented and accepted. The board noted the SSDS report is available for review at the Secaucus Board of Education offices.
Roll-call voting: During the roll calls reported on the record, board members listed as voting in the affirmative included Bartletta, Bolognino, Diadetta, Barry, Geller, Lewis and Lyons. The meeting record showed unanimous votes on the listed resolutions.
Special counsel and litigation: The board concurrently added and approved the retainer agreement with Chasen, Lamparello, Mallon & Capuzzio as special counsel to represent the district in two outstanding John Doe lawsuits. Board leadership said the appointments followed the needs of those cases; no fee amounts were discussed at the public meeting.
Operations and facilities updates: Committee reports detailed summer and early-fall facility work. At Hubert Street and Millridge schools, cement work, painting and cleaning were completed; Clarendon School’s gym floor was sanded, painting completed, door-saddle cement work finished and locks changed; at the middle school six classrooms had ceilings and tiles replaced and LED lighting installed; the high school parking lot had new student-space striping and the performing-arts center had lighting and stage repairs.
Other items: The education committee highlighted AP program achievements (10 students earned AP Scholar with Distinction, 16 earned AP Scholar with Honor, 26 earned AP Scholar) and reported extended-school-year participation (61 students enrolled; 14 parent survey responses with 71% giving the highest overall rating).
What comes next: The board will continue its scheduled committee work, including shared-services and negotiation meetings, and will publish details of the approved agreements and policies on file at the district offices.
