The Leonia Board of Education approved a five‑year strategic plan and received end‑of‑year updates on district and board goals at its June 17 meeting.
What the plan covers: Acting Superintendent Dr. Karamanos and board representatives said the 2025–2030 strategic plan centers on five themes: curriculum and instruction (including technology), district culture (including diversity and inclusion), health and wellness, “above and beyond” programmatic expansion, and fiscal/physical/human infrastructure. Dr. Karamanos said the plan’s milestones followed a public timeline: community feedback completed by November, staff input by January, a draft shared in March and board approval in May. The board approved the plan at its May 20 meeting.
Public access and timelines: The administration said it would launch a public, interactive strategic‑plan website on July 15 that will display goals, objectives, responsibilities and progress indicators. Board member Neumann said the board supported the plan through regular updates at public meetings, monthly committees and a shared Google Drive for document access.
Specific district goals and next steps: The district reported progress on three year‑long goals that mirror the strategic plan: - Strategic Planning: Dedicated committees will meet monthly to refine objectives and metrics. The administration is working on progress indicators and public reporting via the forthcoming site. - Financial Stability: Monthly financial reports, compliance with statutory timelines and an annual independent audit inform budget decisions. The district projected capital and maintenance reserves and stated that yearly transfers into specific reserves are covered by “not to exceed” resolutions implemented at year‑end to preserve flexibility. - Gifted and Talented (G&T): The district completed a needs assessment, held a parent workshop, established building‑level G&T committees and scheduled administrator training with the consultant Donna Reichman for implementation in September.
How the board will oversee progress: The board said it will rely on committee meetings (education, practices and principles, finance and planning) and monthly public reports to track the plan and the three goals. The board also said public feedback remains encouraged at regular meetings and during the non‑agenda public comment period.
Ending: Board members described the work as a first year of analysis and planning, with facilities ad hoc work and communication plans to follow. The administration emphasized that the interactive website launching July 15 will be the primary public tool for timelines and assignments.
