Council dedicates Jackson Park diving boards in memory of former council member Mike Elam

The Vienna City Council adopted a resolution dedicating the diving boards at Jackson Park Pool in memory of Mike Elam. The resolution, read on the floor by Council member Skogstad, described Elam as a two-term Vienna City Council member who volunteered widely in youth sports and recreation.
"Mike Elam was larger than life," Melissa (identified at the meeting as Elam's family member) told the council after the resolution passed. She described Elam's long association with Jackson Pool, his enjoyment of the diving boards and his work with youth programs. "I love the laughter of our sons and their friends," Melissa said, recounting how children returned to the line to use the boards.
The resolution recorded Elam's education and community involvement, naming Parkersburg High School and Marshall University and noting his induction into the PHS Football Hall of Fame. The council voted to pass the resolution unanimously; the mayor presented Melissa with a signed copy of the resolution and said the city will place a plaque at the diving boards to memorialize Elam.
Melissa said nearly 30 people made donations to the "Mike Elam Memorial Diving Boards," and that her contribution combined with those donations will support the pool renovation and the dedicated boards. Council members offered brief remarks in support; no amendments or funding appropriations were made at the meeting beyond the pledge of donations and the plan to install a plaque.
