Facilities representatives said the high school's secondary electrical line was damaged during flooding from Hurricane Ida and needs replacement. The district said Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G) will shut power to the building on a scheduled date (the district cited June 30) so contractors can replace the secondary; district staff said reconnection timing depends on PSE&G's inspection and that restoration could take from one week to several weeks, extending four to six weeks or possibly into July or August.
Board members and staff said contingency plans include using the middle school for programs that would normally operate at the high school during the shutdown. The administration said custodial staff and contractors will be allowed in the building during the work but that the building could not be occupied in full during the outage. The electrical work is meant to restore additional capacity for future projects and to allow expansion of generator coverage so essential operations and testing are less likely to be disrupted by outages.
Facilities reported other projects in progress or planned: the LHS science wing renovation starting August 2024 with an estimated completion in December or January (year listed in discussion varied), renovation of an art-room sink tied to insurance recovery from an August 2024 rainstorm, work on a culinary dishwasher drawing package, and a planned electric service upgrade. The district also said five of seven electric buses had been delivered and that EV chargers are installed but waiting for PSE&G to connect the wiring.
No formal vote was recorded on facilities projects at this meeting; board members discussed scheduling and contingency planning for summer programs and the start of school.
