Sheriff Mark Daniels described a traffic stop in which deputies arrested a driver for driving under the influence after observing a vehicle traveling at roughly 30–33 mph in a 55-mph state-speed zone and erratic turning behavior.
Daniels said the stop led to a drug-recognition investigation and that the driver, an Uber driver with a passenger, was taken to jail. “Long story short is, thanks to one of my deputies in Sierra Vista PD, this was a drug recognition investigation for impairment. They end up taking her to jail for DUI,” Daniels said.
The sheriff warned that drivers can be charged when impaired “to the slightest degree” under Arizona law: “If you're gonna take pills, if you're gonna take scripts, illicit, whatever it may be or alcohol, DUI in the state of Arizona is to the slightest degree of impairment. You can't drive a motor vehicle, folks,” he said. Daniels also noted the driver had a prior DUI arrest earlier in the year under similar circumstances.
Daniels said the passenger was an adult and therefore no additional felony charge for a juvenile passenger applied. He urged the public to avoid driving while impaired and to report unsafe road behavior.
