Faith in Blue and Lori’s Place will hold an open house on Oct. 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month and highlight local services for victims of family and sexual violence.
The event, hosted at Lori’s Place (214 E. Tacoma Street, across from Lehi Roberts Park), will bring faith leaders and local law enforcement together with advocates and the public, organizers said. “Lori’s Place is a 24/7 operation where we can take victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, [and] crimes against children,” said Chris Heizer, chief of police for the Sierra Vista Police Department. Heizer described Lori’s Place as providing forensic medical exams and interviews that support prosecution.
Bishop Tom Simpson of New Jerusalem Community Church said the event is a chance for clergy and congregations to partner with law enforcement: “This is a coming together between these two entities,” he said, describing Faith in Blue as the faith community’s role to provide spiritual care and support. Organizers also said survivors will speak at the open house to describe the cycle of violence and how victims access services.
Heizer said Lori’s Place serves not only Sierra Vista but broader southeast Arizona and that the center’s presence reduces the need to transport victims to Tucson for forensic services. He encouraged public attendance and noted the open house is an opportunity for faith-based groups to learn how to refer people to the center.
The event is free and open to the public; organizers urged community members, clergy and law enforcement partners to attend. For logistical questions, organizers advised contacting Lori’s Place or the Sierra Vista Police Department.
