Sunbury — Police Chief presented patrol statistics Oct. 1 showing increased calls for service and reiterated that department resources are focusing on speed enforcement at several high-complaint locations.

Chief Howard told council that calls for service were up roughly 180 calls year-over-year and that enforcement efforts have targeted speed. He said radar-sign monitoring on South Road 3 at Southview showed roughly 25% of cars exceeding 35 mph, with an average speed of about 25.5 mph at the site; roughly 10,000 cars passed that location weekly. Weatherby and Fairlane saw about 18.5% over the 35-mph threshold and an average speed of 23.5 mph. North Miller at Meyer had a lower violation rate, about 8.5% over 35 mph with average speed about 21.4 mph.

Chief Howard listed locations where mobile radar signs are deployed currently: Ping near Callaway; Saffron and Butterfly; North Columbus and Rainbow; and Sunbury Meadows in Viola. The department continues to collect and analyze the data to guide enforcement.

Chief Howard also noted community engagement events, including a “touch-a-truck” event and donations from local groups to support outreach.

What happens next: The department will continue targeted speed enforcement at the identified corridors and provide additional radar-sign data to council in coming weeks.
