Pasco proclaims Oct. 15 White Cane Awareness Day to highlight services for residents with vision loss

Pasco County commissioners on Oct. 7 approved Resolution CA026‑5103 declaring Oct. 15, 2025, as White Cane Awareness Day in the county and received remarks from the Lighthouse for the Visually Impaired and Blind.
The resolution, read into the record by staff, recognizes the Lighthouse’s work training people who are blind or visually impaired and calls on citizens and employers to support orientation and mobility and employment opportunities. Becky (identified as the Lighthouse CEO) told commissioners about local programming and upcoming events including a “bowling in the dark” fundraiser and a blindfolded street crossing at the West Pasco Government Center to raise awareness of the white cane law and safe accommodation.
Commissioners praised the Lighthouse’s services and highlighted partnerships to improve shelter communication with visually impaired evacuees during hurricanes. The board adopted the resolution on a voice vote. Commissioners directed staff to receive and file the resolution and make flyers available to the public.
The resolution text on the agenda names the county proclamation and encourages schools, employers and the public to recognize the white cane as a mobility tool and to follow the white cane law’s requirements for motorists and employers.
