Principals from Mount Vernon schools presented their school improvement plans to the Mount Vernon School Board and the board approved all six plans by a 4-0 vote.
"We set our school improvement goals. We're looking for a slow and steady sustainable growth," said Miss Ashley Guston, Vernon Intermediate School principal, describing targets including modest percentage gains on proficiency and growth measures and classroom-level interim checks to guide interventions.
Other principals outlined school-specific goals: one principal set NWEA growth and iLearn proficiency targets (for example, a 65% target to meet or exceed projected RIT growth and a goal to increase iLearn ELA proficiency by 5 percentage points in targeted grades); another principal said third- and fourth-grade iLearn ELA proficiency target of 55% and discussed rotating data meetings and targeted interventions. A middle/high principal identified objectives to increase SAT math and English scores by at least 5% and expand dual-credit course offerings by at least two courses in the next year.
The board accepted the plans on a motion by Stacy, second by Megan, and the chair announced the motion carries 4-0. Board members and staff emphasized ongoing monitoring through PLCs (professional learning communities), instructional rounds, RTI meetings and other data checks. Several principals shared culture and behavior strategies (house meetings, restorative practices, nurture groups) and plans to track staff engagement and student belonging.
