Education committee notes resignation, considers Hyde for vacancy and moves meetings to 5:30 p.m.

The Summer County Education Committee on Oct. 6 announced that Commissioner Teacher has resigned from the committee and said it will consider Mr. Hyde to fill the vacancy at a future meeting.

"Commissioner Teacher has resigned from education. So I have asked Mister Hyde for consideration," the committee chair said during opening remarks.

The chair also said the committee will move its regular meeting start time from 6 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. "We're gonna start moving our education meeting to 05:30 instead of 06:00," the chair said, citing efficiency concerns about waiting for reports from health emergency services.

The committee noted Director of Schools Dr. Lankford was on fall break and that a representative from the school system, Penny Brown of the maintenance group, attended in his stead. The director’s report included an update that the playground planning group had its first paired meeting, which ran more than two hours and included parents, principals, community supporters and centralized personnel. The chair said that group reached consensus on several next steps and that a larger committee has been convened that includes parents and school-based staff.

No formal appointment to fill the vacated committee seat was made at the Oct. 6 meeting; the chair said the item will be brought up later. A separate item on athletic projects and an innovation center will be discussed at the committee’s November meeting.

The committee’s change to meeting time and the planned appointment are internal committee administrative items; there was no roll-call vote recorded in the transcript for the appointment and no formal vote on the time change beyond the chair’s announcement.
