The commission agreed on Tuesday to form an ad hoc committee to study how funding for volunteer fire departments would be collected and whether to pursue a state-level referendum.
The committee, the commission chair said, will solicit recommendations on membership and report back. "I'll ask for recommendations from the committee on who needs to be on the ad hoc," the chair said during the discussion. Commissioners said the panel should include a mix of county commissioners, citizens and volunteer fire department members.
Commissioner Smith suggested adding volunteer captains to the panel: "I think having some of them on that committee to kind of iron some stuff, that would be great," he said. The chair said nominations would be taken and the commission would announce the committee next month; the item will appear in old business for follow-up.
Commissioners discussed the relationship between the committee's work and state action. A commissioner asked whether the referendum process already was moving to state legislators; the chair said he would double-check that timing.
No recorded formal vote was taken during the discussion; commissioners moved to establish the ad hoc committee and to return the item as old business for formalization and announcements next month.
