City to design 2027 water-main replacement project covering about 15,000 feet of mains

The Public Service Committee moved to place on the consent agenda an ordinance authorizing solicitation of professional engineering services to design the 2027 water main replacement program, which staff said will target about 15,000 feet of pipe and prioritize sections with chronic break histories.
Public Service Director Chris Ludlow told the committee that the city conducts this replacement work annually and this year's program will focus on pipe with repeated breaks rather than strictly on age. "This year, it's gonna be about 15,000 feet of water main," Ludlow said. He also said, "I don't know, probably 20% of our water mains over a 100 years old, but that doesn't always mean we start with the oldest first. We look at water main that's got sections... numerous breaks on it, and then we build a project from there."
Ludlow said the current step authorizes design; future legislation will return to the council to authorize construction and contracting for the replacement work. Committee members approved moving the item to the consent agenda without recorded opposition.
