The Logansport Parks and Recreation Board voted Oct. 8 to apply for a SHARP grant through the National Recreation and Park Association to fund a Tai Chi program aimed at older adults.
Jacqueline, a parks staff member leading the proposal, told the board the grant would primarily pay for instructor certification (including master trainer options) and some marketing. She said Tai Chi classes are not currently available in Cass County or neighboring counties and that the program is a hands‑on instructional option that participants can practice during sessions rather than only hearing about exercises. The plan, if funded, is to hold classes at multiple senior assisted‑living facilities and at the McHale Complex so seniors could attend either on site or by bus for two sessions a month.
Jacqueline said the grant supports two instructor certifications and marketing assistance. Board members discussed eligibility and whether the program could later be integrated into SilverSneakers or similar senior fitness offerings; staff said further coordination with senior centers and insurers would come after grant award.
A motion to approve Parks Board Resolution 2025-12, authorizing the department to apply for the SHARP grant, passed by voice vote; no opposition was recorded in the meeting transcript.
Board members encouraged staff to pursue outreach to senior living facilities, coordinate with regional partners and, if the program succeeds, consider opening classes more broadly to interested community members.
