At the Oct. 6 full commission meeting the Civic Design Review chair, Commissioner Deborah Walker, reported that the committee reviewed and unanimously approved three design proposals.
Powell Street improvements: the committee reviewed redesign plans for three blocks between Market and Geary Streets. The plan includes widened sidewalks, new paving, custom seating, lighting upgrades and a "golden lantern" feature. Commissioners praised the project’s community focus and offered technical feedback on material selection and tree placement. The small project review passed unanimously.
Ingleside Police Station replacement, phase 1: the committee approved schematic/phase 1 design that combines a new two‑story facility with renovations to the historic 1910 police building. The design includes a public entrance, a community room and landscaping with stormwater management features intended to improve safety and community engagement; the phase 1 review passed unanimously.
SFO West utilities and paving: the committee unanimously approved the SFO West utilities and paving project, a small, flood‑safe, durable utility building intended to support SFO’s Westfield campus. Commissioners commended coordination with nearby airport developments.
Why it matters: these approvals clear the way for project teams to proceed to subsequent design and permitting phases and reflect the committee’s review of design quality, materials and public realm impacts. Each approval was unanimous and characterized as a small or initial design review rather than final site construction approvals.
Next steps: project teams will incorporate the committee’s feedback as they move into detailed design and permitting with relevant city departments.
