A resident told the Sullivan County Veterans Committee that the SUNY Sullivan facility used for recent veterans events is not accessible for people using wheelchairs and urged the county and college to add an elevator or curb cuts.
The resident said ramp slopes at the college exceed appropriate grades and that accessible parking and curb cuts are inadequate near the main entrance. “The ramp should never be more than 3 degrees,” the resident said, and added that the side entrance used during a recent event involved a steep grate that made navigation difficult for someone using a rollator.
Howie Goldsmith, commander of AMVETS Post 50, who reported on the county’s recent Veterans Stand Down at SUNY Sullivan, told the committee the college location "is accessible so we... we dealt with it." He said event organizers used a delivery entrance and side door to provide access to the gymnasium during the event.
Committee members said accessibility was a consideration during the event’s planning and that after-action review would guide changes for next year. No formal action or referral was recorded at the meeting to request facility modifications from SUNY Sullivan.
The exchange occurred during the public-comment period; the committee did not adopt a resolution or direct staff to pursue capital changes at the college during that meeting.
