The Construction Council voted unanimously on Oct. 9, 2025, to declare the house at 249 Barrett Place a public nuisance and to order demolition after Development Services staff presented photographic evidence of long-term neglect, structural failure and interior hazards.
An official from the dangerous-structures unit described photos taken in September and October 2025 that show rotted siding, roof holes, sinking floor framing, missing drywall, graffiti and unstable attic stairs. The inspector said the house, built in 1929, has deteriorated to the point that interior access was unsafe and that the structure presents a threat to neighborhood safety; staff recommended demolition under City Code Chapter 6, Article 8, citing subsections 1, 2, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12, 15, 17 and 18.
Two neighbors submitted public-comments urging demolition. One commenter said the property had been abandoned for more than eight years and had been repeatedly reported for overgrown vegetation and trespass; another neighbor, Amanda Lic, who lives across the street, said she supports demolition after years of nuisance issues and encampments on the property.
After hearing staff and public comment, a motion to declare 249 Barrett Place a public nuisance and order demolition within 30 days passed unanimously. The council’s order also requires the property to be secured and cleared of debris; staff will follow up if the owner does not comply.
