City parks staff previewed a multievent fall calendar including a professional strongman competition, a large community walk, downtown trick-or-treating, outdoor movies and the return of the seasonal synthetic ice rink.
The Strawman (strongman) competition is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 20, with main events 1–6 p.m. along Shoreline Drive. Staff said Amazon will film portions for Prime Video, BCSN Plus will carry the live feed and event organizers will provide merchandise and VIP options, including boat access for spectators. "Just a really cool event...we're happy to host and make sure their event goes off without a hitch," said Parks staff.
A community "walk" event returns Oct. 18; organizers are planning a larger footprint downtown now that construction on Columbus Ave. is complete. Downtown trick-or-treating is set for Oct. 25 from about 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and staff are working to add signage and expand participation along East and West Market streets.
Staff also discussed three planned "movies in the parks" showings, targeted for early evening Sundays, with Lions Park and Churchwell Park identified as likely locations. Possible family-friendly titles mentioned included Hocus Pocus, Halloweentown and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
The pop-up synthetic ice rink at Jackson Street Pier is planned to open Nov. 13 and run through December with no admission charge; staff said only skate rental will be charged. Typical hours will be Thursdays and Fridays 5–9 p.m., Saturdays 2–9 p.m. and Sundays 2–7 p.m.
No formal actions were taken on events during the meeting. Staff asked for community support from sponsors and vendors to broaden participation and signage for downtown trick-or-treat.
