Board approves district positive behavior support plans; staff to report follow-up attendance and behavior data

The Box Elder School District Board of Education approved positive behavior support plans submitted by each school and directed staff to return with tracking data at agreed intervals.
District counselors and administrators developed the plans, which district staff said include suicide prevention, crisis intervention, substance-use components and elementary-grade bullying-prevention strategies. Presenter Megan Bushnell said the current submissions include discrete goals the district can review each trimester.
Bushnell told the board that in prior years plans tended to list strategies; this year principals and counselors were asked to set measurable goals and to follow up with the district office. “I asked them to come up with actual goals that we can then kind of take every trimester, and I'm gonna have them follow-up with me either in a meeting after school or partial, like half day or something to meet with me to go over how that's going,” Bushnell said. She said a data challenge is that some schools rely on spring data and that the district’s panorama survey had just opened this week; she said she will ask principals to review progress after the first trimester.
Board members asked whether staff could present attendance and behavior trend data back to the board; a board member requested a follow-up at the end of a trimester or midyear. Bushnell and other staff said district attendance teams are meeting monthly and that they are already tracking parent contact rates and attendance improvements at the school level; they agreed to return with attendance, SafeSchools violation counts and behavior-incident data after the first trimester or at a time the board determines.
The board approved the plans by voice vote with no opposition. Members emphasized they want to see the results so the board can “cheer and celebrate” and determine whether the plans produce measurable districtwide improvements.
