Superintendent and students report enrollment and achievement gains; East Side principal named Oregon elementary principal of the year
Summary
Interim Superintendent Gary Roberts and a Marshall High School student provided updates on school activities, enrollment and programs. The council recognized Kara Davidson for being named Oregon’s 2025 elementary principal of the year for her work at East Side School and noted improved reading, math and attendance metrics.
Gary Roberts, interim superintendent of Coos Bay schools, told the council he brought student and district updates and introduced Warren Levine, Marshall High School’s student representative, who summarized recent school events, sports results and activities.
Warren Levine reported recent extracurricular and athletic successes at Marshall High School: cross country runner Jackson Stovall ranked in the top four at state, volleyball (defending state champions) won its home opener and football started the season 3–0. Levine also said the school introduced a new cell-phone policy and schedule changes that have given students more classwork time.
Roberts also highlighted that Kara (Kara Davidson) — previously principal at East Side School and newly assigned to Sunset School — was named the Oregon Elementary Principal of the Year by the Coalition of School Administrators (COSA). Roberts said East Side’s reading proficiency rose from roughly 20–30% to about 60% at grade level and that math proficiency and regular attendance also showed substantial gains. He said East Side’s regular-attendance rate rose from 53% in 2023–24 to 70% in 2024–25.
Kara Davidson, speaking at the meeting, said she accepted the recognition on behalf of East Side School staff and students and credited staff placement and teamwork for improvements. “It’s not my award,” Davidson said, “it obviously goes to the staff of East Side School who worked really, really hard to make that happen.”
Councilors congratulated the superintendent, students and Kara Davidson and asked staff to arrange future, more detailed presentations on district accomplishments and planning.
