Community garden reports new visitors, volunteer events and plant donations; town to support drainage fixes

Katie said an open house the previous weekend attracted more than 20 first‑time visitors, including families, and that the garden has hosted volunteer celebrations and regular workdays. Volunteers reported sightings of monarch butterflies, black swallowtail caterpillars and a Downey woodpecker; staff and volunteers said sunflowers and pollinator plantings are attracting birds and insects.
Katie described recent drainage work behind the garden shed along Lookout Road to move standing water, work that she said involved Johnny and a public works crew. She said volunteers plan sheet‑mulching along borders and will plant pollinator species in the fall with help from French Broad River Academy students. Katie said Greenworks and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are donating pollinator plants, trees and shrubs for the project.
Council members asked how harvesting works; Katie said the garden is open and that newcomers are encouraged to volunteer once before harvesting so they learn the garden layout. Town staff and council members encouraged volunteers to share flyers and contact information; the town posts garden events on social media and on its email list. Katie said regular Saturday workdays continue through the rest of the month and that plans for winter growing and cover crops are under discussion.
No formal council action was requested at the meeting.
