The Green Bay Common Council voted to close a short portion of Vanderbrack Street after staff said the closure responded to safety orders from the state railroad commission and traffic and accident history near multiple track crossings.
Staff told the council they reviewed traffic counts, accident history and alternate routes and recommended the closure because sightlines are poor where multiple tracks cross near Quincy and Eastman, making warning devices impractical. The plan commission had recommended the closure; Alder Prophet moved to amend the city action to match the plan commission’s proposal, and the council approved that amendment and then the item as amended.
Council discussion referenced prior orders from the railroad commission requiring lane reductions at Quincy and the closure of Eastman at Quincy for safety reasons; staff said Vanderbrack was likewise cited. Council members said the closure addresses safety by rerouting traffic to safer alternate streets.
The motion to amend and adopt the plan commission proposal passed by voice vote; no roll-call vote was recorded in the transcript.
