District updates gym HVAC projects and seeks systemwide controls to prevent extremes

Darren (project manager) reported that some ductwork and structural penetrations are complete and several units are expected to be running in the coming months. "We were looking at about, I wanna say, April for, to have the units up and going," a facilities presenter said of ongoing installations. He said some projects were delayed by weather and deliveries but that multiple campuses now have operational units and the teams are preparing substantial-completion paperwork for board approval.
Board members asked how gym thermostats will be controlled after units come online. The facilities presenter said the district is negotiating with control vendors to allow limited, time-bound overrides at the building level so teachers can make temporary adjustments without creating long-term cold or hot conditions. "My dream is that a teacher in her classroom, if she's too hot, she can turn it down... but it'll default back to a normal number," the presenter said.
Staff also warned that setting gym temperatures too low can cause building maintenance problems. "We wanna have cool gyms, not cold gyms," a facilities speaker said, explaining microbial growth risks when buildings are kept too cold.
Why this matters: many schools and community events rely on gym space, and the board heard that HVAC timing and control policies will influence when gyms are usable for sports and public events. The board requested a simple status list of gym projects and estimated completion dates so trustees and constituents can reference definitive timelines.
No board vote was taken on systemwide control policy during the presentation; staff said they will return with recommendations and schedules for ongoing projects.
