Photographer Randy Tennell introduced “Know It Alls: Dedicated Docents of Monterey County,” a countywide portrait project and planned book documenting volunteer docents and the cultural and historic sites they serve.
Tennell said he photographed 100 painters for a prior book and has begun a new project to photograph volunteer docents at museums, historic sites and cultural assets across Monterey County. He said he has completed about 16 site sessions so far and is aiming for between 50 and 100 documented sites. Tennell described plans for a printed book to be distributed to libraries and schools, and for a traveling exhibit of large photographic prints to circulate to county venues. He said the project was roughly 20% funded and that he is pursuing additional funding partners, grants and benefactors.
Board members and other participants praised the project as a potential tool for heritage tourism and for raising awareness of lesser-known sites in Salinas and South County. Members suggested local leads and recommended the Boronda Adobe/Monterey County Historical Society as a site to include. The board noted that the traveling exhibit could be paired with programming to drive visitation and possibly generate revenue for participating venues.
Tennell did not request direct city funds at the meeting but said he welcomed suggestions for sites, local contacts and funding partners. The board thanked Tennell for the presentation; no formal action was taken.
