Heritage Park stakeholders say museum projects losing city funding; ask for signage and naming progress

During the public-comment period, Denise Estrada, representing Heritage Park stakeholders, asked the Historic Resources Board to note that Heritage Park received no city funding this year and described efforts to raise support and visitor numbers.
Estrada said Heritage Park held a sale that helped cover bills for the First Mayor’s House and that this year — apart from the pandemic year — it is the second year the site has received no city funding. She said the organization was accepted into the Monterey County Gives program launching November 3 and encouraged the public to support donations there. Estrada reported increases in open-house bookings and student class visits and said the Heritage Park welcome center and museum portfolio of work has been published and will be provided to staff.
Estrada also said progress with the city on formal naming for Heritage Park, funding and signage had not met expectations and that stakeholders would continue to pursue those items. She noted an upcoming visit by the California Retired Teachers Convention and said the organization is exploring a StoryCorps event later in the year to record local heritage stories.
The board thanked Estrada for the update; no formal board action was taken during the public-comment period.
