Board approves 2026–27 school calendar on first reading; school to start Aug. 17

The Davis School District Board of Education approved the 2026–27 school-year calendar on first reading after a presentation by elementary director Ruth Ann Keller.
Keller described the committee — about 30 members including parents, PTA, classified and certificated employees, association leadership and all school directors — and the structure of the draft. "School will begin on Monday, August 17," Keller said. She summarized other features: teacher preparation days at the end of the first, second and third terms; a two-day fall break in October; two full weeks for winter break; and a spring break scheduled March 29–April 1 with a teacher compensation day on April 2.
Committee members discussed alternative start dates and break positioning. Keller said moving the start later would produce a shortfall in required days unless compensating adjustments were made; the committee ultimately retained the Aug. 17 start and two-week winter break. Business administration staff produced a term-day summary: first semester 83 days and second semester 91 days.
The board received the calendar for public comment launch and approved the draft on first reading; the communications office will publish the draft and a public survey link so the community can provide input. Keller said the committee's priority was academic soundness when balancing term lengths and breaks.
