Austin Freenet told the Technology Commission Oct. 8 that it will host Tech for All Fest on Saturday at the DeWitty Center, an event the group expects to draw more than 200 participants and include device giveaways, digital‑literacy partners and community activities.
Jasmine, representing Austin Freenet, told the commission, “We are very excited to be holding our TechFrollFest this Saturday at the DeWitty Center. We expect over 200 participants to come, learn more about our services and then, we are having this event in partnership with Austin Film Society.”
Event details provided during the meeting included in-person activities with community partners such as Goodwill and the Austin Area Urban League demonstrating VR headsets, free food for the first 250 participants, free professional headshots provided by Boston Folk Society, and raffles of tablets (with six months of hotspot service) and laptops. Freenet will also accept refurbished device donations at the event.
Commissioners asked staff to circulate event materials and a flyer to the full commission and to city council offices. Chair Steven Apodaca encouraged commissioners to volunteer at the event and suggested coordinating distribution through staffers Dan or Jesse.
What’s next: Jasmine said she will send event materials to staff and the commission. No formal commission action was taken; the announcement was part of the public communication portion of the meeting.
