City Council on Oct. 6 approved a transfer of $800,000 from the city's opioid settlement fund to the CARE office fund to keep CARE offices operating after federal grant funding ended.
The finance committee reported the recommendation to move the money at the council meeting. "With the ending of some of the federal grant funding that the CARE office was using for its operations, your finance committee recommends a transfer of this amount from the opioid settlement fund to continue the operations for the CARE office," Council member Jenkins said.
The CARE offices provide case management and related services supported in part by temporary federal grants. Council members discussed the finance committee's recommendation and adopted Resolution 25-094 by voice vote.
The transfer is presented in the meeting as a bridge to maintain services while staff and council pursue other funding sources; the resolution text says the funds will be "used for continued operation of the CARE offices due to the expiration of federal grant" support. The finance committee brought the resolution forward and recommended adoption.
No specific timeline, later reporting requirement, or further conditions were stated in the council action; council members did not attach additional amendments during the vote.
Council recorded the recommendation and adoption in the meeting minutes; officials said the transfer came in response to the expiration of federal grant funding that previously subsidized CARE operations.
