The Contractor Licensing Board approved a series of contractor license applicants during a regularly scheduled meeting, and board members discussed revising exam question banks and the county’s plan to offer online license renewals in 2027.
Board member 1, board member, said the board would require some applicants to retake exams when answers were incorrect and described plans to update the testing question bank. "So for that reason, I say tough. I'm sorry, but you just need to retake the test. Everybody else has to do it," Board member 1 said. The board subsequently moved and approved applicants by voice vote.
Why this matters: Licenses affect who can lawfully perform construction and HVAC work in the jurisdiction and are the basis for consumer protections and regulatory oversight.
The board recorded approvals for multiple applicants across trades including residential contracting, roofing, commercial contracting and HVAC. Scores and pass statuses noted in the meeting record include: Cameron Hirsh (residential contractor part 1 — record shows "part 8078%", pass), Daniel Lacy (unlimited roofing — 70%, pass), Joshua (residential contractor — record shows "8290%", pass), Gavin Curtis (residential remodeler — 90%, pass), Logan Spindler (HVAC journeyman — 80%, pass), Matthew Kern (HVAC journeyman — 84%, pass) and others. For several entries the transcript records combined or unclear percentages (for example, "8078%" and "8290%"); those figures are presented as they appear in the meeting record.
Board members discussed creating a new TAFF (test) and pulling new questions not found in standard reference books. Board member 1 said the board has a set of about 50 custom questions used in local testing and suggested expanding that pool. "We do need to get a new TAFF written, so we will work on it," Board member 1 said.
Separately, a board member noted the county has approved a plan for a new online payment system so contractors can renew licenses electronically in 2027. "County has approved a new online payment system, so hopefully contractors will be able to renew the license online in 2027," Board member 1 said. No implementation timeline or vendor contract was provided in the meeting record.
Decisions vs. discussion: The meeting record shows a sequence of motions to approve individual applicants followed by voice votes in favor; those motions passed. Several substantive discussion points — the need to revise exam questions, the possibility of applicants retaking tests, and the county’s online renewal plan — were discussed but no formal written policy change or implementation schedule for exam revisions was adopted at the meeting.
The meeting ended after the approvals and brief procedural remarks. The board adjourned following a motion and unanimous voice approval.
