District weighs options after repeated damage to high school stadium scoreboard

Summary
Staff reported repeated panel damage to the high school scoreboard caused by kicks and impacts; options discussed included netting, replacing with a video board, relocating the board and seeking sponsorships to offset cost.
District staff told the Building and Grounds Committee that repeated impacts from kickers and soccer play have damaged the high school stadium scoreboard panels and that repair is costly because the panels are obsolete.
Andy Allen, a staff member, described the damage and said custom replacement panels cost about $2,000 each and are difficult to source: “The panels over time, where it's located ... if you have an average ... kicker, it will hit the panels almost every time.” He said staff temporarily covered the scoreboard with a banner to improve appearance and proposed exploring a net, relocating the board to a different corner of the stadium, or replacing it with a video board. Allen estimated a full video replacement with new support structure would be around $195,000 and suggested advertising or donor sponsorships might offset a portion of that cost.
Committee members discussed testing netting that other schools use to protect scoreboards and asked staff to obtain cost estimates for both a net extension and a full replacement or relocation with advertising revenue scenarios. Staff said the district already has netting material and would custom-fabricate an extension for the scoreboard if feasible. No procurement decision was made; staff will return with cost estimates and funding options.
