Committee approves plan to replace half district staff laptops this year, second half next year

District staff told the Building and Grounds Committee the administrative laptop fleet ordered in early 2021 is aging and becoming expensive to repair and recommended replacing roughly half the fleet this year and the remainder next year to create a staggered replacement cycle.
Andy Allen, a staff member, said the district received a large order of laptops in 2021 that were hard to procure and that the current machines are on year four and costly to repair. He said the plan is to replace about 800 units this year and the rest next year, keeping the same model to simplify service and parts. “If major things go wrong, they are quite expensive to repair now, like, more than their value is worth,” Allen said.
A committee member confirmed the funding is already in the technology budget and that unit prices have fallen since the COVID spike; staff said current pricing was roughly under $800 per unit. Allen said harvested parts from replaced units could be used to repair remaining laptops and that some retired devices could be repurposed for special education or other limited purposes. The committee did not authorize a specific purchase order at the meeting; staff said procurement would proceed within the technology budget and return with purchase details as required.
